North Africa is primarily desert terrain, although there are some marvelous
beaches along the coastline. The North African region was conquered by Arab Muslims
around 670AD. Since this time this area is predominately Muslim. North Africa is
occasionally included in the Middle East region as it is considered part of the

TRAVEL TO ALGERIA
Algeria has a
recent history dominated by civil wars and ongoing strife. Recently, foreigners
have been targeted in various terrorist attacks. The US Department of State cautions
travelers to carefully consider any travel plans to Algeria.
TRAVEL TO LIBYA
Libya has attempted
to increase tourism however US citizens' will still find ongoing difficulties. Visa
rules and restrictions are routinely changed without notice. Americans have been
regularly denied entry despite existing group visas. While many interesting sites
exist for tourism, multiple hurdles still exist for the traveler.
TRAVEL TO MOROCCO
Morocco has four
imperial cities: Fez, Marrakech, Rabat,
and Meknes. These cities have medieval monuments, souks, and picturesque
market squares. When traveling between cities, try to use the rail system which is
considered to be the most modern and efficient in Africa. A visit to Morocco is not
complete without visiting the very popular cities of Tangier and
Casablanca where beautiful mosques, citadels, palaces, and more
bazaars abound. Most of the population lives near the Atlantic or Mediterranean
coastal areas, however escaping the cities can lead to a variety of adventures
from trekking in the mountains, visiting the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis
, and even camel treks in the Sahara.
TRAVEL TO SUDAN
Sudan continues to
remain extremely dangerous. The US Department of State cautions against all travel to
Sudan except official government travel.
TRAVEL TO TUNISIA
Tunisia has a
variety of interesting terrains. The Mediterranean beaches stretch to beautiful
mountains continuing onward to the Sahara desert. The capital of Tunis
reflects its French Colonial past. Some of the worlds finest Roman ruins can be found at
Dougga. Most of the desert scenes of Star Wars were
filmed in Tunis. Local tour operators regularly run tours to the filming locations.
There are over 100 hot springs located in Tunis, some used since Roman times. Don't
forget to visit the seaside resorts for world class scuba diving and snorkeling in
the crisp clear Mediterranean waters.
